Foxe's Book of Martyrs, John Foxe

Book Review: This book is a gut-wrenching insight into the widespread martyrdoms that took place during the rule of Queen Mary most infamously known as Bloody Mary! Published only five years after Mary's reign and early in the reign of her half-sister Queen Elizabeth I, it sought to show readers the malevolence of the Roman Catholic Church and to sanction the establishment of the Church of England not as a seperate denomination, but rather as the true church of Christ.

This book needs to be read with steady concentration and it is extremely humbling! A study in Red Martyrdom, this book brings to the forefront the trials early Christians faced which are well documented in this compilation of first hand eye-witness statetments, and third party narrations.

Foxe's Book of Martyrs is an abridgement to “The Acts and Monuments of the Church: Containing the History and Sufferings of the Martyrs” first published in 1563 and 1570. (http://www.peterreynoldsbooks.com/home/foxereview.htm)
